HATHA YOGA (General Physical Yoga Practice)
The practice of Yoga does not only deal with developing the body but
also covers all the aspect of a person's life as stated in the Eight Limbs
of Yoga. It is concerned with the physical, mental and spiritual well-being
of an individual as well as his environment and relationship with other
creatures. Victoria’s general yoga classes are based on principles of
Iyengar yoga for alignment and Viniyoga for emphasis on the individual.
The classes are suitable for beginners and improvers and usually last an
hour, which includes approximately 10 minutes of relaxation at the end.
ASHTANGA VINYASA (Power) YOGA
This is a fast-paced gymnastic type of yoga with a set series of postures
linked together in a flowing sequence. It is suitable for people with at least
one year’s yoga practice or beginners who are physically fit. To do the
whole Primary Series takes at least one and a half hours so, initially, Victoria
teaches the series a little bit at a time over a 6 week period for an hour each
week. Once practitioners have learnt the basics they can then join a led-class
(of one and half hours’ duration) or take part in Mysore-style training where
they practice in a group with adjustments by the teacher, although
instructions are not given.
PILATES
Invented by Josef Pilates in the early 1900s this programme was initially
popular with dancers. Pilates involves a series of very slow, controlled small
movements performed on a mat which lengthen and strengthen the muscles
and involve concentration and focus. It is suitable for all levels of practitioner,
particularly those who prefer a slower paced class. Victoria’s Pilates classes
last around 45 minutes to an hour.
